Important Tiffin Info

How to open your tiffin

Your tiffin tin is made of pretty strong stuff so please be careful when opening. We suggest to don’t open it near your computer or laptop but take time to enjoy it away from your desk.

Simply lift the holding clasp 90 degrees and the arms will open. You can then unstack your tiffin and dig into the tasty contents.

A sticker on the top of each tiffin indicates if it is meat, veggie or vegan.

What to do when finished

As the climate is not quite so warm in Manchester as it is in the Indian sub-continent, we transport our tiffin in insulated catering boxes to keep them cosy.

When you have finished enjoying your tiffin simply put all the components back in the box ready for collection. There is no need to wash them as they will be sterilised by our team when they get back to Zouk.

Don’t forget about collection

Our Zouk tiffin wala (or delivery driver) will arrange a convenient collection time with you between 4pm and 6pm the same day as your delivery.

If you need to arrange a time outside of these hours, please contact us in advance via email on manchestermanager@zoukteabar.co.uk to arrange this.

Please note a charge of £35 per tiffin is applicable for any Tiffin’s not returned.

Being as Eco Friendly as possible

Our delivery vehicle is a EAV trike. This means we are keeping our carbon footprint as low as possible. We reuse all of the tiffin’s so there is very limited packaging waste from our tiffin deliveries. The paper wrap and sticker around your tiffin are both fully recyclable and can be placed in your recycling bins.

The Story of the Tiffin

Every day in Mumbai thousands of workers look forward to receiving their tiffin lunch. The delivery of these delicious freshly cooked meals, either from a workers home or their favourite restaurant, by the city’s dabbawallas (box carriers) has existed since around 1890.

Traditionally the tiffin box, which usually has at least 3 layers and includes several delights, would be collected by the dabbawallas each morning from their customer’s residence and then delivered to them at work filled with a nutritious home cooked meal.

Today they are often collected and filled from restaurants or specialist tiffin caterers. After lunch, once the hungry workers have devoured the contents of their tiffin, the dabbawallas then take the empty boxes back to the appropriate residence or restaurant.

What is so interesting about the tiffin is that in Mumbai it has become a fundamental part of the city’s culture. It is ingrained in the life of worked and dabbawallas are so amazingly committed to their trade that the service remains uninterrupted even during the peak of the monsoon season.
