Manchester Freshers Week 2026: A Student Guide to Getting Started

Manchester Freshers Week is not one single week. Different universities welcome students at different times, and the best part of the experience often happens after the first rush — when you begin finding your people, your routines and the parts of the city that feel like yours.

This practical guide brings together the main 2026 welcome dates, a simple arrival checklist and ways to meet people beyond the usual nightlife, including the free Zouk Student Welcome Party on Wednesday 30 September.

Manchester Freshers and Welcome Dates for 2026

  • University of Salford Welcome Week: Monday 7 to Sunday 13 September 2026.
  • University of Manchester Welcome Week: Monday 21 to Friday 25 September 2026; Semester 1 begins Monday 28 September.
  • University of Manchester Societies Fairs: Tuesday 22, Thursday 24 and Friday 25 September 2026.
  • Manchester Met Welcome activity begins from Monday 28 September, with Freshers Fairs on Tuesday 29 and Wednesday 30 September 2026.
  • Zouk Student Welcome Party: Wednesday 30 September 2026, 7pm–9pm.

Always check your university and Students’ Union pages for programme-specific induction times and last-minute changes.

Your First-Week Checklist

  • Complete university registration and check your university email.
  • Collect or activate your student ID — you will need it for campus access and student offers.
  • Learn your route to campus and identify the nearest bus stops or stations.
  • Register with a GP and save university support contacts.
  • Attend at least one society fair or introductory event.
  • Arrange one relaxed meal or coffee with flatmates or course mates.
  • Leave space in the diary; you do not need to attend everything.

Meet People without Making Every Event About Alcohol

Freshers content can make it seem as though every friendship begins in a nightclub. It does not. Society events, campus activities, breakfast, group meals, walks, sport and alcohol-free socials can all be easier places to have a proper conversation.

Zouk offers a wide range of mocktails and soft drinks alongside cocktails, and its fully halal food menu makes it a welcoming choice for mixed friendship groups and societies.

Use Your New Zouk Student Offers

STUDENT SAVINGS 20% off eligible food and drink Monday–Friday, 11am–7pm • Friday unlimited breakfast BOGOF, 9am–12 noon • valid student ID • offers cannot be combined

The weekday offer is useful for lunch between welcome activities or an early dinner with new flatmates. Friday breakfast provides a different reason to get a group together at the end of the week. Read the complete terms before visiting.

Join the Free Zouk Student Welcome Reception

Freshers does not end when the official University of Manchester Welcome Week finishes. On Wednesday 30 September, Zouk is bringing students, societies, student groups and Students’ Union representatives together on the mezzanine from 7pm to 9pm.

The free event includes a complimentary welcome drink, with alcoholic and alcohol-free options, plus Zouk nibbles. Come with flatmates, bring a society committee or attend independently and meet people when the first-week pressure has started to settle.

Places are limited. Reserve your free place by booking on our website and quoting 'Student Welcome Reception'.

What to Do After Freshers Week

The goal is not to complete university life in seven days. October is when routines start to form. Try another society, arrange dinner with someone from your course, explore beyond campus and check in with anyone who might also be finding the transition difficult. Use the evergreen Zouk Manchester Student Guide for more ideas around Oxford Road, food, group socialising and student life.
