Welcome to Manchester: A Student Guide to Oxford Road and the City Centre

Welcome to Manchester. Whether you have travelled across the country or around the world, the first few weeks are a mixture of excitement, new names, unfamiliar streets and a surprisingly large number of decisions.

Zouk Tea Bar & Grill has been part of the Oxford Road neighbourhood for years, so we have created a simple student guide to the area around the University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University, Circle Square and the city centre. It is not an exhaustive guide to Manchester; it is a useful starting point for finding your feet, meeting people and discovering places close to campus.

Get to Know the Oxford Road Corridor

Oxford Road connects university buildings, libraries, music venues, museums, restaurants, cafés and student accommodation with Manchester city centre. It is one of the areas you will use most, even if your course is based elsewhere.

Take time to walk the route in daylight during your first week. Notice your main university buildings, bus stops, Manchester Oxford Road station, supermarkets and a few reliable places to meet. Zouk is on Chester Street, just off Oxford Road and close to Circle Square and First Street.

Find Places Where You Can Actually Talk

Not every student social needs to revolve around a nightclub. Meals, society dinners, breakfast, mocktails and small group events can be easier places to make friends because you can hear each other and nobody has to drink alcohol to feel included.

Zouk serves a fully halal Indian and Pakistani food menu, alongside vegetarian and vegan choices and a wide alcohol-free drinks selection. That makes it useful for mixed friendship groups, international students and societies bringing together members with different preferences.

Make Your Student Budget Work Harder

ZOUK STUDENT  20% off food and drink Monday–Friday, 11am–7pm, with valid student ID • Friday breakfast BOGOF, 9am–12 noon • offers cannot be combined

Use student discounts for meals you would genuinely choose, not simply because something is reduced. Zouk’s weekday offer works for lunch, afternoon catch-ups and early dinner. On Friday mornings, students can instead buy one unlimited breakfast buffet and receive a second buffet free.

Read the complete offer terms before visiting.

Join Societies and Try Something New

Societies are one of the quickest ways to find people with a shared interest, culture, faith, sport or course. Go to society fairs, attend a few introductory events and do not worry if the first group you try is not for you.

Zouk welcomes university societies for committee dinners, welcome socials, networking events and celebrations. Society organisers can also speak to our team about the mezzanine and possible collaborations.

Make Manchester Feel Smaller

A new city becomes manageable when you build a few familiar routines: one route you know well, one reliable place for food, one regular activity and a handful of people you can message. Explore gradually rather than trying to complete Manchester in your first fortnight. If you are arriving in September 2026, our separate Manchester Freshers guide includes the key welcome dates and details of the free Zouk Student Welcome Party on Wednesday 30 September.
